Sharks around the world are in crisis, most shark populations have fallen dramatically. There have been some shark protection successes with several international initiatives to protect large Shark Sanctuaries. However, many governments still need real data to show evidence of shark population declines. Several studies have shown the value of sharks to tourism or the environment is much greater than the value of dead sharks. However the data on shark decline is mostly about dead shark catches from fisheries. The data from diver surveys show much more dramatic declines in shark numbers because reef sharks are often territorial and have restricted ranges.
