Volunteers needed for larval fish settlement project, 2013

juvenile damsel on pom pom island

Juvenile damselfish like this are easy to count just after settlement to the reef

We need volunteers to monitor our replanted reefs for larval fish settlement during the summer months ( March – Oct 2013).  We have lots of planted reefs with healthy growing coral. These planted reefs attract existing adult fish very quickly.  This is very satisfying but doesn’t actually increase the number of fish on the island.  We need to attract more larval fish from the plankton and provide habitat that increases survival.  The bottle reefs and replanted coral reefs we have should attract large numbers of larval/post settlement fish.  However to prove that these planted reefs are a sucessful way of increasing the total fish numbers in an area requires careful observation and documentation.   The project will be satisfying since we have already watched the same baby fish grow on some of our reefs over several months.  The project will require commitment to learn the fish species names and to be able to identify large and small fish species.
